The editorial board of the journal Science in Olympic Sport continues to publish articles by prominent scientists who have influenced the development of Ukrainian and world sports science. The column “On the History of Ukrainian Science” presents an article by a well-known Ukrainian physiologist, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Mykhailo (Musiy) Yakovych Horkin. This article was written on the basis of a report at the extended Plenum of the Scientific and Methodological Council of the Committee on Physical Culture and Sports under the Council of Ministers of the USSR, made on July 15, 1951 in Kyiv. The scientist analyzed the state of theory and practice of organizing the process of education and training of young athletes. The author examined topical issues of physiology of youth sports in the light of I. P. Pavlov’s theory of higher nervous activity. The article provides a comprehensive analysis of the types of higher nervous activity that should be taken into account when teaching children: mobility, inertia, inhibition and excitation. M. Gorkin's views have theoretical and practical significance in modern conditions of sports development and can be useful for a wide range of professionals working in the field of sports and related disciplines, as well as in long-term training of athletes.
